Downhill Mountain Bikes
Downhill mountain bike racing is a sport that puts very specific demands on equipment and has therefore resulted in bikes that ride and look much different than a traditional XC style mountain bike. DH bikes are generally quite heavy and feature huge amounts of travel that range from 8 to 10 inches. The geometry is reclined back to put the rider in a more controlled position when rocketing downhill at frightening speeds. Downhill mountain bikes also sport large diameter hydraulic disc brakes and have a very low center of gravity to help with stability at high speeds.
Downhill bikes are not cheap. You can spend as little as $1,500 on up to 7 grand for a top of the line ride. However, the price seems to be coming down year after year as technology gets better. As with most other mountain bikes, DH bikes are trending towards stronger and lighter frames and components.
