Single-speed mountain bike riding has taken off in recent years with almost every major mountain bike maker offering a single-speed. Some people choose to ride a single-speed for it's ease of use and low maintenance. No need to deal with the headaches of a finicky drivetrain when you only have one gear. Some single-speed riders seem to gravitate toward the challenge of riding a non-geared bike, while others just like relatively cheap prices.
Whatever your reason for riding a single-speed, there is no denying the popularity of the 1 gear set-up. There are single-speed races popping all over the country and riders now have the option of purchasing widely available conversion kits to revive that old hardtail in the garage.
